Ivor the Engine and Friends
The Story behind the audiobook & film idea
Daniel Postgate: “A friend asked me for stories to read out on social media during lockdown a while ago, and this got me thinking that some of my father’s stories would go down well while everyone’s cooped up indoors. Looking through the various recordings by Oliver I found not that many straight readings of Ivor. It was then that the idea of asking some iconic stars of the Welsh firmament if they wouldn’t mind reading the stories instead came to mind. We asked around and were delighted to find an enthusiastic response! So with magical contributions from members of the great and the good of Wales - Georgia Ruth, Cerys Matthews, Rob Brydon, Rhys Ifans, and Eddie Izzard who’s an honorary Welshman as he lived in Swansea in his youth – we’ve put together some lovely story-telling from Ivor’s classic adventures.

Now, with Quintet Pictures and Smallfilms Ltd we’re getting up a good head of steam for a brand new production of Ivor the Engine, this time a live-action cinema film no less. Set in the hills and valleys of Wales, it will be gently humorous family fayre to take us all off to the charming and eccentric world of Jones the Steam, Dai Station, Mrs Porty, Mr Dinwiddy, Idris the dragon and, of course, Ivor himself. Telling the tale of how Ivor got his musical pipes, it will showcase the abundance of top-notch acting talent Wales has to offer and the breathtaking beauty of Wales itself. In these dark times we are presently going through I think we all deserve something to cheer us up, and what better than to drift back to a simpler time to enjoy the goings on of a well-loved sentient locomotive who has been part of British culture for over sixty years. Known and loved across generations, Ivor the Engine will be a cinematic experience for the whole family to enjoy together. Peep-peep!”
